Axe Bat has been popping up all over baseball, including in the hands of some of the game’s best hitters. I won’t dive into the details about the Axe Bat and its origination; I recommend reading our interview with the Axe Bat team for more background on that. What we will discuss today is some of the claims made by the Axe Bat marketing team. The claims in question are pulled directly from their website:
We wanted to take it a step further though, performing an independent study in a real world setting. Specifically, we wanted to look at whether the Axe Bat stood up to the performance claims that they make. We worked with Dan Kopitzke of the K-Zone Academy, an elite training facility for amateur and professional baseball players located in Apex, NC. Kopitzke’s facility offered us a HitTrax-outfitted batting facility where we could perform analysis of the swing and resulting hits from players using a variety of bats. Kopitzke himself is a highly regarded coach who works with players ranging from middle school through the professional ranks, making his facility a perfect place to assess the impact of the Axe Bat on players of varying skill levels. Mike Rathwell, CEO Driveline Baseball K-ZONE Academy Athlete, CHRIS PERRY, St. Louis Cardinals, was named pitcher of the month...6/10/2014 Chris Perry, a Cary native who trains with Dan Kopitzke at the K-Zone Academy in Apex, has been named Pitcher of the Month for May in the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league system. Chris has struck out 59 hitters in 35-2/3 innings this season for the Peoria (Illinois) Chiefs, the St. Louis Cardinals' Class A Midwest League affiliate. Chris to Dan, on his performance this season, “Best part about it so far is I feel like I have been optimizing the athletic, mechanical and EV stuff that we have been working on and talking about.”
Andy started at the K-Zone back in February of 2009 in one of our pitching boot camps at the ripe age of 13. He and several of his teammates attended the camp. After the camp, Andy and his parents decided to enroll him in one of our regular programs. I remember thinking that Andy was the least athletic of his teammates, In the almost 5 years since that time, Andy has transformed himself into a superior baseball athlete that excels both on the mound and at the plate. He has signed with UNCG to pitch and play first base.
Andy has taken what he has learned at the K-Zone and applied it on the field to dominate his competition. He really took to our Effective Velocity (EV) program for pitchers and went from someone that might pitch to the ace of his high school JV staff as a Freshman. He built on this success and was the ace of the Varsity the very next season as a Sophomore. His success on the field continued right into his signing with UNCG. That's not bad for a nonathletic 13 year old. As far as Andy has come, we believe he is still near the beginning of his baseball journey...more greatness to come.
